Background in Project Management

In addition to my duties as a technical writer, I provide significant administrative and project management assistance to the Project Managers I support. I have been a SharePoint Content Manager for the Air Combat Directorate, Test Data Management System Administrator for U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, safe custodian for the Sensors Test Branch, and updated the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) for the Aviation Mission Common Server program. At present, I am responsible for five weekly and eight monthly status reports at Scientific Research Corporation. In these reports, I inform the Contracting Officer’s Representative and Government Task Lead of project and task progress made during the reporting period. These reports include Gantt charts, diagrams, and views created using Microsoft Project, updates to program financials, and identified risks.

As part of my Master’s of Science in Technology program, I took an Advanced Project Management in Technology class —OLS 57100. This class increased my understanding of project management concepts, such as project planning, project initiation, project closeout, earned value management, work breakdown schedule, network diagrams, critical paths, resource management, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, and assigning responsibilities.

Project Management Sample 1

Summary:

I input the work breakdown schedule for the St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 (D303) Learning Management System (LMS) Project into Microsoft Project 2016 to define task dependencies and create a Gantt chart.

Applicability to Industry:

I currently track deliverables for seven task orders using Microsoft Project. This sample demonstrates my ability to:

  • Create a new project file and milestones

  • Define task dependencies

  • Establish and update task durations

  • Identify critical paths

  • Change project views

  • Track project progression

Project Management Sample 2

Summary:

As part of the OLS 57100: Advanced Project Management in Technology course, we were assigned groups and required to execute a project in its entirety. My group’s project was the St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 (D303) Learning Management System (LMS) Project. This sample includes the two project status reports we submitted to inform the project sponsors of the status of the project. The reports include earned value metrics.

NOTE: This was a group assignment, but I was the primary author of the documents since I had the most experience with writing status reports.

Applicability to Industry:

These status reports demonstrate my ability to:

  • State the progress made on a project during a specified reporting period, including the percentage of the project completed, and a description of the work accomplished to support the cost

  • Explain difficulties encountered and remedial action taken during the reporting period, and anticipated activity with a schedule of deliverables for the subsequent reporting period

  • Detail the outstanding actions awaiting the Contracting Officer’s authorization, including corresponding work assignments, such as subcontractor consents, overtime approvals, and work plan approvals
